Test Drive of 2014 Hyundai Elite i20 Review

The ‘i20’ super-mini car was first launched by South Korean car maker Hyundai in the year 2008. The model was used to slowly phase out the ‘Hyundai Getz’ by 2011. The car is sold in the Asian (except South Korea and Philippines), European and Oceania markets. In August 2014, the second generation ‘i20’ named the ‘Elite i20’ was launched.  It was launched in India due the huge popularity of the model in the Indian car market.


The new model will make its European debut in October at the Paris Motor Show. The design of the new car is inspired by Hyundai’s latest ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0′ design philosophy. The car will be offered in up to ten variants. The official press release has described the car as a dynamic, sporty and innovative automobile that has class leading features. The brand new ‘Elite i20’ has the design made with the latest Hyundai Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. The car has a premium, refined style that catches the eye. The brand new ‘Elite i20’ is a showcase of Hyundai’s new design ethos of intuitive interior and chic exterior. Together it projects a sporty appearance and also a kind of harmony. The new design concept behind the car puts focus on the evolution of aesthetics and the confidence of perfection. Thanks to the inclusion of premium quality equipment, refined style and superior driving dynamics, the car delivers a feeling that is normally found only in vehicles of upper segments. This new model successfully delivers driving pleasure while evoking class and confidence. While Speaking on the occasion of the car’s global debut B. S. Seo, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motors India had described the ‘Elite i20’ as a ‘world-class product’ that has been designed and engineered for delivering value beyond the expectations of the customer. He also hoped that the ‘Elite i20’ will become a trendsetting model that properly reflects Hyundai’s modern brand direction. It will also fuel the growth of Hyundai in India.

 Exterior/ Interior

The new ‘i20’ has an aggressive front thanks to the inclusion of the swept back headlamps, large hexagonal grille and the touch of chrome. There are also sleek fog lamps. The sporty alloy wheels come with diamond cut shape. Other notable factors are- dynamic body lines extending from wheel arches in the front to the rear tail lamps, chrome door handles and electric mirrors with turn indicators. On the rear there is a spoiler with stop lamps, wiper, washer and defogger for the windshield and rear camera with sensors (in select variants).

The interior has been given a dual-tone (black and beige) color theme. Thanks to the use of good quality materials and finish, the interior has an up market feel. The sporty looking three spoke steering wheel has built-in phone and audio controls. There is an integrated audio system with 1GB internal memory, Aux-input and USB support.   Two 12 Volt power ports are there so that you can charge gadgets and any running accessories. For additional convenience, front arm-rest and auto climate control with clean air ionizer is also made available. AC vents have been fitted for the rear seats as well. The legroom is decent and there is a big boot compartment with 285 liter capacity for carrying luggage.


Engine/ safety

 The ‘Elite i20’ will have two engine options. There is a 1.2 liter dual VTVT kappa petrol engine with 83 PS power. The other engine is a 1.4 liter U2 CRDi diesel engine with 90 PS power.

There are several vital safety features present in the car. Some of them are- Dual airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Impact Sensing Door Unlock system.
