Despite holding around 37% market share in India, Maruti Suzuki, the Indian subsidiary of Japanese giant Suzuki has found one segment very tricky and that is the compact sedan. While Maruti’s offering ‘SX4’received a good response after its launch it subsided after the launch of the smaller ‘Dzire’. Since then Maruti has not able become a real competitor in the segment and the fight has been between cars like Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento etc. But Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch a replacement for the ‘SX4’ and this new introduction may very well become a game changer for the company. The new model is called the ‘Ciaz’ and was announced in September with the launch date set for 6th October, 2014. At 2014 Auto Expo in New Delhi, the company had showcased the production version of the car and it was appreciated for its looks which is rather uncommon for Maruti Suzuki. The design of the outgoing SX4 was considered to b a bit dated. Back then the company had promised that the model would be feature heavy and will look to offer more than its competition. It is also expected that it will be priced very aggressively within a range of Rs 7 lakh to 11 lakh.
The new ‘Maruti Ciaz’ will be offered with a multi-jet diesel 1.3 liter engine from Fiat and a K-Series petrol 1.4 liter engine. The engine have been made better for improved mileage and performance . The diesel engine can produce power of 89 BHP and torque of 200 Nm while the petrol engine can develop 91 BHP power and 130 Nm torque.
The new ‘Ciaz’ has a design unlike any car from Maruti Suzuki before. It is bold, muscular and yet looks elegant. The designers have used many body lines which are something new from this brand. The hood is large and the main highlight of the front fascia is the large chrome grille with 4-slats. The large headlamps also capture attention. The side glance of the car gives out an aerodynamic feel and the optional 16-inch alloy wheels will increase the style quotient. There are also electric side mirrors. The rear is sculpted and sleek and the tail lamp cluster looks great. The rear bumper also looks great. All together the rear looks very up market. The model will be offered in a total of seven body colors- Fire Brick Red, Pearl arctic white, clear beige, chocolate brown, midnight black and glistening grey.
To say the least, the interior of the new car is spacious. It has an impressive wheelbase of 2560mm and a ground clearance of 170mm which is much higher than its segment rivals. The black and beige color theme adds a premium look to the cabin. The steering wheel has mounted audio control in it. The instrument cluster is quite large and contains indicators, two analogue and a digital display. There is good leg space in the car and rear seats get AC vents for increased comfort. The seats are slim shaped but comfortable nonetheless.
The new ‘Ciaz’ will be available in a total of eight variants in the market. These are- VXI+, VXI, ZXI+, ZXI, VDI+, VDI, ZDI+, ZDI. Features will vary little bit from variant to variant.
There is a touch screen based infotainment system with Bluetooth, Radio, USB, AUX and it also supports 4 speakers.
