Highest Boxoffice collection tamil movies list

With the AR Murugadoss film ‘Kaththi’ starring Vijay and Samantha, crossed 100 crore at the box office (worldwide), national spotlight has fallen on Tamil film industry again. In the domestic market the film has crossed the 81 crore mark . The film revolves around a criminal running from police who discovers that he has a lookalike who is a social crusader fighting for farmer rights. By turn of events, they switch places and slowly the criminal also begins to believe in the farmers’ cause.  It is seldom that a film from a regional industry does that much business. While in India Bollywood films are mostly known for their big budgets and huge box office collections, in the last few years the Tamil film industry has grown by leaps and bounds. Here is a look at some of the biggest hits of all time from the Tamil industry:

  • Enthiran ( Robot in Hindi)- directed by Shankar, this 2010 sci-fi film featured Tamil film’s biggest icon Rajinikanth in dual roles and Bollywood’s star heroine Aishwarya Rai. It dealt with a scientist who builds a humanoid robot but later struggles to control it. The special effects of the film were groundbreaking at that time and the soundtrack was also popular. The film is counted among both the most expensive and highest grossing Indian films ever. The film’s net collections stand at around 320 crore worldwide and 255 crore in India.
  • Thuppakki – ‘Kaththi’ is not the first time Vijay has tasted huge financial success. This 2012 action thriller by AR Murugadoss features Vijay as an army officer on holiday who encounters a terrorist sleeper cell. The female lead was played by Kajal Aggarwal. The film went to become one of Tamil film’s all time biggest hits. The collections stand around domestic 162  crore/ 180 crore worldwide.
  • Vishwaroopam – written and directed by the legendary Kamal Hassan who also played the lead role in this 2013 spy thriller. The film was simultaneously shot in Hindi. It featured Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose and Shekhar Kapoor in other key roles. The film faced a ban for sometime before release after Muslim organizations protested about the depiction of the community of the film. However, the film was critically acclaimed and was a huge box office success. Its net collection was 175 crore worldwide with 150 crore coming from India.
  • Sivaji- the magic of Rajinikanth was weaved again in 2007. In this film he plays a software engineer returning to India to do development work but faces resistance in form of a corrupt businessman. The film was directed by Shankar and music composed by AR Rahman. Shriya Saran played the female lead. Its worldwide net collection was almost Rs 150 crore with around 121 crore coming from domestic box office.
  • Singam II- a sequel to the 2010 hit film ‘Singam’ it was a bigger success than the original. Suriya reprised his role as the fearless cop Duraisingam aka Singam who goes undercover to bring down criminal activities in a coastal town. Upon release it was successful all over South India and ran over 100 days in Tamil Nadu. Its net collection is reportedly around 136 crore.
  • Dasavatharam- counted by many as a pioneer in Indian sci-fi films, it starred Kamal Hassan playing 10 different roles. The story and screenplay was also written by Kamal Hassan. The main plot revolved around a bio-technologist trying to hide a bio-chemical weapon from terrorists. The female lead was played by Asin and the film was directed by K.S Ravikumar. It was the first ever Tamil film that was distributed in some foreign markets by Walt Disney. Upon release, it was unprecedented success and managed to earn almost 200 crore worldwide. In India it was one of first films to reach 100 crore and at one point of time was the highest grossing Indian film.
  • Arrambam- released in 2013 and directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film starred popular action hero Ajith Kumar  as a mysterious man trying to unmask a government scam. The female lead was played by Nayanthara. It became the highest grossing Tamil film of the year and managed to earn a net collection 116 crore in the domestic market. It was also successful in the overseas market.
  • Kochadaiiyaan-released in early 2014, the film was notable for its use of motion capture technology. The makers decided to use the technology because lead actor Rajinikanth was not keeping well at that time. Bollywood star Deepika Padukone made her Tamil debut with this film. The film was also released in multiple languages 
  • Nanban- directed by Shankar, it was a remake of the Hindi blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’. The featured an ensemble cast led by Vijay and also featured, Srikanth, Jiiva and Ileana D’Cruz. Just like the original, this remake version too was a big success both critically and commercially. The domestic collection  of the film reached Rs. 100 crore.
  •  Jilla- released in early January, this action drama, starred Vijay, veteran actor Mohanlal and Kajal Aggarwal was a big success. Vijay played the role of a criminal turned police officer who urges his adoptive father to give up life of crime.  Apart from Tamil Nadu, the film was also a success in Kerala due to the presence of Mohanlal. The film’s net domestic collection was almost 80 crore.
