Firefox OS for mobile phones launched in Germany and Spain

All the speculations surrounding the new Firefox OS now come to an end as the first generation was launched in Germany and Spain. Mozilla has announced that the phone will soon be launched in other regions by other partners. At present, Deutsche Telecom is set to launch the first handsets in Germany while Telefonica is doing the honors in Spain.

The first two handsets of the newly launched Mozilla Smartphone operating system are ZTE open and Alcatel One Touch Fire. The theme of Mozilla’s keon reference design is apparent in both the sets with 1 GHz processor, 3.5 inch screen, 256 MB RAM, 480 X 320 pixel displays, 3.2MP rear camera and a card slot for microSD. Though the features are those of a standard entry level Smartphone, it will ship your favorite mobile apps without support. More web apps are promised to be delivered very soon.

Mozilla has succeeded in creating a generation of cheap (they cost only about $90!) and lightweight generation of operating systems. It is also touted to be a more open platform than its counterparts like Windows phone, Android or iOS. Device makers, wireless carriers and anybody who can create a web page can code an app on this platform.
